County retail spending in last year’s third quarter (July, August and September) averaged $2,680 per resident, according to the State Board of Equalization. That is 25% higher than the state average of $2,139. The gap is even wider between Orange and Los Angeles counties, with the latter’s residents averaging $2,041, or 31% less. In Riverside County, where many Orange County workers live, the average per capita retail spending was $1,798, or 49% less than in Orange County. Retail spending in Orange County was 7.1% higher than in the year-earlier quarter, while statewide spending increased 5%.
