‘Love Unto Death’
France, 1984, 92 minutes , 8 p.m . Alain Resnais and screenwriter Jean Grault take a profound subject--life against death--and give it sobriety and passion. The cast (brilliant) and argument (relentless) recall “Melo”: a man returns from the dead; he and his lover succumb to the mystic pull. The film has too many black interludes; otherwise it’s a work of majestic integrity and battering intensity.
RECOMMENDED.
