Kansas City Sweeps Lazers Out of MISL Playoffs, 7-5

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Jan Goossens had two goals and two assists as the Kansas City Comets defeated the Lazers, 7-5, Wednesday night, advancing to the Western Division final series of the Major Indoor Soccer League playoffs.

The Comets, completing a three-game sweep of the Lazers with their first home game of the best-of-five series, advanced to the Western Division final series for the first time in their history.

The Comets will play the winner of the San Diego-Tacoma series in a best-of-seven series. San Diego leads the series, 2-1.

Jim Gabarra’s second goal of the game, a power-play goal at 5:37 of the fourth quarter, gave the Lazers a 5-4 lead. With 3:04 to go, the Comets pulled their goalie for a sixth attacker.

Goossens’ second goal at 12:57 tied the score. Just 24 seconds later, he set up rookie Dave Doyle for the game-winner. Barry Wallace added an empty-net goal with 23 seconds left.

The Lazers took a 4-0 lead on first-quarter goals by Chris Chuden and Gabarra, a second-quarter power-play goal by Chico Borja and another goal in the second period by Doug Neely.

Goossens scored his first goal at 12:35 of the second period. Armando Betancourt scored 49 seconds later to make it 4-2 at halftime. Kia and Kim Roentved scored in the third quarter to tie the game, 4-4.
