Nebraska Senate Seat Object of Fierce Battle

OMAHA — A fierce challenge by Rep. Hal Daub has Sen. David Karnes fighting for survival in Tuesday’s Republican primary in Nebraska, and the victor has to face Bob Kerrey, a popular Democratic ex-governor, in the main event.
Democratic state Chairman Tom Monaghan says he hopes the GOP rivals wake up after the voting “bloodied and broke.”
Daub accused Karnes on Thursday of being a “rubber stamp” for President Reagan and Gov. Kay A. Orr. Orr appointed Karnes last year to fill the vacancy created by the death of Sen. Edward Zorinsky, a Democrat. Karnes called the charge “crazy” but said he would not be drawn into negative campaign tactics.
