STATWATCH : Bergara’s 4 Home Runs Double School Mark

San Fernando leadoff hitter Josh Bergara, a senior, has set school records for runs scored in a 15-game Mid-Valley League season with 23, breaking the previous mark of 20 set by Victor Sotelo in 1984.

A leadoff hitter rarely sets the school single-season home run record, but when the standard is two, even a 5-foot, 6-inch center fielder is capable. Bergara hit four, including three inside the park. Four players--Sotelo and Marvin Fuertes in 1984, Roy Mijares in 1984 and ‘85, and Randy Guerrero in 1987--all hit two home runs.

Bergara also led the team in runs batted in (17) and steals (10).

Shortstop Albert Torres shattered the Tiger league record with a .514 batting average; Mijares hit .488 in 1985. Torres finished league play 19 for 37 and had 11 runs scored and 15 RBIs.

Dodson batted .401 this season and had 6 home runs, a school-record 13 doubles and 28 RBIs. Dodson is Saugus’ career leader in home runs (14), RBIs (73), doubles (21), runs scored (66), slugging percentage (.618), hits (86)--every significant offensive category except stolen bases and triples. And Dodson stole 12 bases in 12 attempts this season.

Baserunning: San Fernando baserunners stole 31 bases in 39 attempts in 15 league games.

Hitting: Verdugo Hills’ John Bojanac batted .500 in 74 at-bats this season and had a 20-game hitting streak during the Dons’ 21-game schedule. . . . In two games last week, Grant’s Jon Kukawski was 5 for 6 with 3 home runs, 2 doubles, 4 runs scored and 6 RBIs. . . . Monroe shortstop Brian Eldridge found his groove about the time May rolled around. In his past seven games, Eldridge is 18 for 25 with 7 RBIs. He has four three-hit games in that stretch and raised his RBI output to 15 and his batting average to .478.
