La Jolla’s Charles Huff, slowed by a hamstring injury much of the season, equaled the state’s best triple jump of the year with a personal-best 49-feet 6-inches at Saturday’s San Diego Section preliminaries at Balboa Stadium.
Huff also qualified for Saturday’s section championships by finishing second in the long jump (23-3), which topped his best this year by six inches.
DIVING
Santana’s Tom Reed won his second consecutive section diving championship Friday with 440.15 points, the second-highest total in section history.
Reed increased his lead by nearly 22 points on his three semifinal dives and scored 118.70 over his final three dives. Reed, a senior, will dive for USC next season.
SWIMMING
Lars Jorgensen of Mt. Carmel finished his victory-filled high school career by winning two races and contributing to a victory in the 400 relay as the Sundevils won their seventh section boys’ title Saturday.
Jorgensen swam a personal-best and section-record 1:39.89 in the 200 freestyle and also won the 500 in 4:29.62, which was 5.62 seconds off his best.
