Writers Voting on Revised Contract
About 1,100 members of the striking Writers Guild of America met at the Hollywood Palladium and hundreds more gathered in New York Wednesday to vote on a revised independent contract being offered to Hollywood producers outside the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers.
ABC Television officials advised producers not to sign the independent contract and said ABC would not seek programming from producers who did sign. NBC previously made a similar announcement. CBS has not publicly stated its position.
Guild chief negotiator Brian Walton, urged members to approve the interim agreement as a “strategic” device, intended to separate more producers from the bargaining position taken by the 200-plus member alliance. More than 130, mostly smaller, companies have already signed either the proposed revised agreement or an earlier independent contract offered by the guild in May.
