Youth, 17, Killed in Freeway Crash

An 17-year-old youth was killed Sunday when the pickup truck he was driving smashed through a guardrail on Interstate 8 just east of El Cajon and dropped to an adjacent street, the California Highway Patrol reported.
Wesley Charles Smith of El Cajon was thrown from the truck and was pronounced dead at the scene, the CHP said. A passenger, Timothy Crisp, 23, of Spring Valley suffered minor injuries and was hospitalized briefly for observation, a spokeswoman for Sharp Memorial Hospital said.
The CHP said Smith was headed west on I-8 at about 5:45 a.m. when the small truck left the road, crashed through a guardrail and landed on Camino Canada.
