The United States and the Soviet Union have destroyed about 40 missiles since the Intermediate-range Nuclear Forces Treaty went into effect in June, an Arms Control and Disarmament Agency report said. The missiles were destroyed mainly by launching them on test ranges with dummy warheads. U.S. figures showed that 19 Pershing 2s, one Pershing 1A and two ground-launched cruise missiles have been destroyed since President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev signed the treaty at their Moscow summit meeting. The Soviets have destroyed 19 rockets, mainly older SS-4s and SS-23s.
