Shamir Dismisses Arab Uprising as Bother, Not Threat

JERUSALEM — Prime Minister Yitzhak Shamir has dismissed a seven-month-old Palestinian uprising in the occupied West Bank and Gaza Strip as “a bother, not a strategic threat” to Israel, the Jerusalem Post reported today.
Shamir said in an interview that the revolt “has not changed our basic situation. It has merely served to underscore the existential nature of the conflict.”
Shamir also said the uprising had not weakened Israel’s standing in the international arena.
“It may have perhaps delayed certain steps by certain countries toward improving relations but it has not triggered any deterioration,” he said.
“People get used to it. It appears less and less on their television screens,” the Israeli leader said.
