A helicopter carrying a pallet of roofing materials crashed into the harbor at Marina del Rey Wednesday afternoon, injuring the pilot, a sheriff’s official said.
The pilot, Greg Houfle, 37, of Bend, Ore., was pulled from the submerged helicopter by a fire boat crew, taken to a hotel and airlifted from the roof to UCLA Medical Center, fire officials said. He was reported in good condition.
Although the harbor is the busiest recreational boat harbor in Los Angeles, no boats were in the vicinity when the Sikorsky-type copter plunged into the water, said Lt. John Dwyer of the Marina del Rey sheriff’s station.
The cause of the 4:45 p.m. crash was not immediately apparent.
