Joe DiMaggio underwent successful elective abdominal surgery at Miami Beach, Fla., and was in good condition, a Mount Sinai Medical Center spokeswoman said.

“He’s awake, alert and talking tonight,” said cardiologist Dr. Philip Samet. “He will miss the all-star Yankee reunion Saturday, but we expect him back next year.”

Samet said a portion of DiMaggio’s abdominal wall weakened and ballooned. If it had ruptured, it could have caused excessive bleeding.

DiMaggio, 73, will remain in surgical intensive care until Saturday and could be released in about a week.

He had a pacemaker implanted Feb. 5, 1987, at Mount Sinai, after he was diagnosed as having a slow heart rate.
