WEST BERLIN — Sixteen West Africans have been caught smuggling drugs into West Berlin in the last three months in what appears to be a growing trend, police drug squad chief Gerhard Ulber said Monday.
He told reporters that 97 Africans, mostly from Nigeria, Ghana and Ivory Coast, had been stopped while crossing into West Berlin from the East. Customs officials carried out 29 body searches.
Sixteen people were held in investigative custody after they were found to have swallowed packages containing a total of 6.2 pounds of heroin and 2.8 ounces of cocaine.
