ISLAMABAD, Pakistan — Western diplomats said Thursday that Soviet troops have taken over the defense of the airport in Afghanistan’s capital and are deploying heavy military equipment around it.
The diplomats said the airport has been the target of frequent rocket attacks by guerrillas fighting Afghanistan’s Soviet-backed government.
An attack Sunday missed the mark and 17 people were killed when rebel rockets hit a residential area.
In late June, a rocket attack destroyed eight Soviet jet fighters at the airport.
