Local News in Brief : El Toro : Marine Station Sends Pillar of Smoke Aloft

Black smoke billowed over the Santa Ana Freeway/San Diego Freeway interchange Monday afternoon from the nearby El Toro Marine Corps Air Station, where firefighters were staging a drill with a petroleum blaze.
The Marine firefighters were training “to become proficient in fighting fuel fires,” base spokeswoman Sgt. Deborah Bragagnini said.
Base officials said the drills are held several times each month.
