Theatrical Notes From All Over: Sri Lankan playwright Veditantirige Ediriwira Sarachchandra won the 1988 Ramon Magsaysay award for literature. The Magsaysay Award Foundation said Sarachchandra, 73, had created modern theater out of traditional Sinhalese folk dramas and awakened “Sri Lankans to their rich cultural and spiritual heritage.” It said Sarachchandra’s use of classical drama was influenced by the vitality arising from the cross-culturalization of Japan’s Noh and Kabuki theater interacting with traditional Sinhalese forms.
