County Men Dominate Tennis Event

Orange County men advanced in all but one division Thursday in the California Veterans tennis tournament at Los Caballeros Sports Village in Fountain Valley.

Semifinals begin at 9 a.m. today in five men’s divisions and three women’s divisions.

In the men’s 35-and-over division, Dick Gude of Irvine defeated Ben DeJell of the Netherlands, 6-3, 6-2. In the 45 and over, top-seeded Herb Ahlers of Dana Point defeated Bob Jones of Irvine and No. 2 Billy Higgins of Yorba Linda defeated Ron Berry of Australia, 6-0, 2-6, 6-4. In the 55 and over, Roger King of Fountain Valley defeated John Bennett of Los Angeles, 6-1, 6-4.

In the 60 and over, Pete Corney of Laguna Hills defeated Bob Hall of Carlsbad, 6-2, 6-2. In the 65 and over, John Gensen of Laguna Beach defeated Bob Ellis of Beverly Hills, 3-6, 6-2, 6-2.
