Rep. Ron Dellums (D-Calif.) began a three-day fast in support of the United Farm Workers grape boycott and its protest against the use of pesticides that the union alleges are dangerous. “I believe that the day has long since passed in which farm workers and their children must suffer from inhumane working conditions, including coming in contact with cancer-causing chemicals . . . and having their rights as workers crushed,” Dellums said at a rally in Oakland. UFW leader Cesar Chavez recently ended a 36-day fast at a union retirement village in Delano. Supporters pledged to continue the protest in a chain of three-day fasts.
