HEILBRONN, West Germany — The U.S. Army today removed nine Pershing 2 missiles from a base in West Germany, the first step in the withdrawal of all U.S. intermediate-range nuclear rockets from Europe.
The removal to sites in the United States comes under the terms of an arms treaty signed by President Reagan and Soviet leader Mikhail S. Gorbachev in December.
“It’s the first time that U.S. intermediate-range missiles have been withdrawn in Europe,” U.S. Navy Cmdr. Gerry Ryan of the European Command Headquarters in Stuttgart told the Associated Press.
