Hollywood : Historic Overlay Zone Sought

Councilman Michael Woo has asked the City Council to establish a historic preservation overlay zone for the Whitley Heights area of the Hollywood Hills.
Whitley Heights, built in the 1920s by H. J. Whitley, was one of the first planned communities in Los Angeles and for years was home to some of the entertainment industry’s biggest stars, including Rudolph Valentino.
Woo said that the proposed overlay zone would help to protect the character of the area by regulating development in keeping with the area’s mostly Mediterranean-style architecture.
The proposal, which has the support of the Whitley Heights Civic Assn., one of the city’s oldest neighborhood groups, has been referred to the council’s Planning and Environment Committee.
