Newport Beach’s Collins Leads All the Way in Speedway Event

Phil Collins of Newport Beach won the four-lap scratch main event Friday in front of 2,908 spectators Friday at the weekly speedway program at the Orange County Fairgrounds in Costa Mesa.

Gary Hicks of Glen Avon was second, Brad Oxley of San Clemente third and Steve Lucero of Riverside fourth. Collins took the lead out of the gate and was a wire-to-wire winner.

Steve Russell of Anaheim won the eight-lap handicap main event. Hicks was second, Jim Fishback of Etiwanda third, Ed Castro of Ojai fourth and Andy Northrup of Ontario was fifth.

Fishbeck defeated Hicks, 1-0, in the four-lap match race. Brian Papbalardo of Monrovia won the second division and Gary Akreyd of Newport Beach won the third division.
