Romance in a Rowboat
A flood of nostalgic thoughts swamped my mind as I read Jerry Hulse’s article on “The Maine Attraction” (June 19), all about Kennebunkport. My mother and I spent many pleasant summers at the Old Fort Inn where the food was superb. When I was 6 I remember dancing solo for all the old ladies in the downstairs “ballroom.” I even recall my beautiful pink satin dress and my first pair of dress slippers.
Hulse talks of romance in his opening paragraph. At the age of 6 my romance was affixed to a gentleman of about 60 summers. He sat beside me every morning as we rowed across to the bathing beach. Once he even held my hand. I didn’t know his name until some years later. It was author and dramatist Booth Tarkington.
