Local News in Brief : Anaheim : Mouse Power Fires Up Ride-Sharing Program

With Mickey Mouse there to cut the ceremonial ribbon, the city on Tuesday launched a new ride-sharing program required by federal law.

Mayor Ben Bay joked that he could make a long speech on why the program is a good idea but that, in fact, the city had no choice but to comply with the law.

Under new federal air pollution rules, all major employers in Southern California will have to put a certain percentage of their work force in ride-sharing programs. Anaheim’s goal is to have 55% of the city’s 2,000 full-time employees enrolled by Jan. 1, 1989.

The city cannot offer employees financial incentives now, so the hope is that through education and an office set up for the program, the word will get out, city spokeswoman Carolyn Griebe said.

So far, 200 employees have signed up as interested in the program, Griebe said.
