Local News in Brief : Woman Sentenced in Stolen-Art Case

An antique dealer who helped her mother sell a $13,500 stolen painting to an art gallery was placed on five years of probation Tuesday and ordered to perform 500 hours of community service.

Superior Court Judge Jack Tenner imposed the sentence on Doe Harris, 30, of Beverly Hills, who was convicted in July of one count each of grand theft and receiving stolen property. Her mother, Fawn Harris, 55, was convicted of two counts of grand theft and sentenced last month to 16 months in state prison and ordered to make restitution for the amount of the painting.

Prosecutors said Fawn Harris last December stole “The Shore Road, Morro Bay,” a 1925 painting by California impressionist William Wendt, from the Wilshire Ebell Club of Los Angeles, then sold it to a Laguna Beach gallery.

Before their arrests, the women sponsored antique and art shows at the Ebell Club, a women’s social and educational club.
