POP LP CHART : Heavy-Metal Bands Take Charts--Again

Metallica, those Mozarts of metal and the fave raves of fans and critics alike, are finally making waves-- big waves--on the Billboard magazine pop album chart. The band’s “ . . . And Justice for All” zoomed up to No. 13 in its second week on the chart. By the way, seven of the top 13 albums are metal or hard rock. UB40’s “Labour of Love” (No. 33) and Joan Jett’s “Up Your Alley” (No. 24) are hot items; so is Taylor Dayne’s album “Tell It to My Heart,” (No. 35), which has been rejuvenated by her hit single, “I’ll Always Love You,” the third Top-10 single from the album. “The 1988 Summer Olympics--One Moment in Time,” an album that’s getting considerable exposure during the TV coverage of the Olympics, vaulted from No. 79 to No. 63 and could make an ever bigger leap next week.

* Bobby Brown joins Keith Sweat and Al B. Sure in the vanguard of young black singers who are likely to be the reigning sultans of soul music for the next few years. Brown’s album, “Don’t Be Cruel,” is No. 17 on the pop chart and rising.
