Chuck Weatherspoon ran 13 yards for 1 touchdown and his runs set up 2 other Houston scores, and David Dacus threw 2 touchdown passes as Houston beat Baylor, 27-24, in a Southwest Conference game Saturday at Waco, Tex.
Weatherspoon’s 13-yard scoring run in the third period enabled Houston to overcome a 16-10 Baylor lead. His 12-yard run on a draw play set up a 25-yard fourth-quarter field goal by Roman Anderson.
The Cougars, 3-0 overall and 1-0 in the SWC, scored their last touchdown with 2:34 to play on a 22-yard Dacus-to-Jason Phillips pass play after Weatherspoon ran 23 yards on a draw play.
Baylor (3-2, 0-2) led, 14-10, at halftime on second-quarter touchdown passes of 31 and 5 yards from Brad Goebel to John Simpson.
The Bears scored a safety in the third period when Dacus recovered his own fumble in the Cougars’ end zone.
Goebel teamed with Bobby Jack Goforth with a 29-yard scoring pass play with 43 seconds left and Baylor recovered an onside kick. But Johnny Jackson intercepted a Goebel pass with 4 seconds left to clinch the victory for Houston.
Texas 20, Rice 13--Clutch passing and a second-effort 1-yard touchdown run by Shannon Kelly in the third quarter helped the Longhorns hold off the winless Owls in a Southwest Conference game at Houston.
Rice quarterback Quentis Roper, making a surprising start in place of Donald Hollas, completed a 38-yard touchdown pass to Mike Boudousquie with 5:37 left in the game.
The Owls, 0-3 this season and trying to end a three-game losing streak against the Longhorns, threatened again in the fourth quarter until freshman Willie Mack Garza intercepted a pass from Roper with 1:40 to play.
Earlier, the Owls had Texas backed up on its 8-yard line facing third down when Kelly completed a 61-yard pass to Tony Jones. Kelly later hit Jones for 24 more yards to the Rice 2 and then broke free from the grasp of O.J. Brigance for the 1-yard touchdown run with 1:32 left in the third period.
That made it 20-6 and the Longhorns (3-1) held off Rice’s fourth-quarter comeback. The Longhorns play Oklahoma at Dallas next Saturday.
Texas A&M; 50, Texas Tech 15--Darren Lewis rushed for 177 yards in 27 carries and scored on a 1-yard run and Robert Wilson and Bucky Richardson each scored twice as the Aggies rolled to an SWC victory at College Station, Tex.
Texas A&M; (1-3), the three-time conference champions who had lost three straight games to non-SWC nationally ranked opponents, is ineligible to win the title because of its NCAA probation.
The Red Raiders fell to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the SWC.
Wilson had touchdown runs of 2 and 9 yards as the Aggies built a 36-0 lead in the third period, and Richardson had scoring runs of 2 and 10 yards plus a 2-point conversion run on a fake extra-point kick.
Larry Horton added a 2-yard touchdown run for the Aggies and blocked a Tech punt that was recovered by Alex Morris for a touchdown.
Tech avoided being shut out with 4:39 left in the third period when Billy Joe Tolliver tossed a 27-yard scoring strike to Tyrone Thurman and later added a touchdown run by Anthony Lynn and a 2-point conversion run by Sam Montoya.
Arkansas 53, TCU 10--Kendall Trainor kicked a school-record 5 field goals and the Razorbacks capitalized on 6 turnovers to rout Texas Christian at Fayetteville, Ark., in the Southwest Conference opener for both teams.
Trainor kicked field goals from 30, 30, 49, 34 and 19 yards and added 4 extra points for the Razorbacks (4-0). TCU is 2-2.
Backup quarterback Jimmy Williams and Derrick Russell teamed up on an 87-yard touchdown pass play in the second half.
