U.S. Trade Representative Clayton Yeutter told trade ministers meeting in Islamabad, Pakistan, that the United States was ready to accept some proposals to freeze and cut subsidies on food output and exports as the basis for talks on reforming the world’s farm trade. He reiterated U.S. willingness to agree to short-term efforts to cure farm trade distortions as long as Western Europe committed itself to long-term fundamental reforms. The remarks were seen by some at the meeting to review trade negotiations as a significant change in position.
