Israel’s Use of Detention

In response to “Israel’s Use-Abuse-of Detention,” editorial, Sept. 18:
Your editorial recommends that Israel should end the use of extralegal detention in the occupied territories. All factions in Israel would like to do just that. However, Israel has been in a state of war, not of its choosing, for 40 years. It has not only the right, but the obligation, to take steps for its survival. Israel opts for administrative detention rather than the manner of Jordan’s dealing with an uprising, i.e., the Black September uprising where thousands were brutally killed.
If The Times would like to see the administrative abuses ended, it might recommend that the Palestinian people select a leadership who will: recognize Israel; renounce terrorism; agree to enter into direct negotiations with Israel.
The primary obstacle to the Palestinian aspirations is Palestinian rejectionism.
