Local News in Brief : Bembury Receives Extradition Order

A convicted murderer, who escaped while on a weekend furlough from a Massachusetts prison 15 years ago but has lived an exemplary life in Southern California, was ordered on Monday to be returned to Massachusetts.
Los Angeles Superior Court Commissioner Barry D. Kohn set an Oct. 18 extradition date for Arthur A. Bembury, 37, who went by the name Doug Henare here and worked as a real estate salesman.
Bembury’s attorney, Vivian Gray, said after the hearing that she intends to further challenge Bembury’s extradition. Referring to another Massachusetts case frequently cited by Vice President George Bush in his presidential campaign against Massachusetts Gov. Michael S. Dukakis, in which a convicted murderer escaped while on weekend furlough and then raped a woman in Maryland, Gray said Bembury’s extradition has been rushed because of “political issues.”
Dukakis signed a warrant requesting Bembury’s extradition on Sept. 6, not quite a month after Bembury’s arrest at a Marina del Rey real estate office.
