Tax Vote Upset

David Reyes’ article “Court Upsets 1986 Jarvis Tax Initiative” (Part I, Sept. 16) contains a statement that the court indicated requiring voter approval of tax proposals would be a “gross interference with the fiscal responsibility of local government.” This sounds to me like a disinterred, archetypical coinage of King George. Now that the politicians have made us a colony of the world instead of just England, it would seem some more cosmopolitan interpretation of governmental powers “deriving justly from the consent of the governed” would be apropos, at least from a federal constitutional standpoint.
