Judge Halts Parental-Consent Abortion Law

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — A federal judge issued an order Thursday to stop enforcement of a new state law requiring minors to get the consent of a parent or judge before obtaining an abortion.
U.S. District Judge John H. Moore II issued a temporary restraining order based on arguments that the law unconstitutionally restricts access to abortion for pregnant girls under 18.
Elizabeth White, an attorney representing a clinic and three physicians who challenged the law, which went into effect Saturday, said Moore’s ruling criticized the statute’s lack of confidentiality protection for a minor wanting an abortion, as well as an absence of regulations covering how to get permission for an abortion.
