Going to the Court to Fight Stereotypes

Mark Heisler’s article (Sept. 29) acknowledges that the rewards for women basketball players are simply nonexistent in the United States. The few American women who have played play for other countries, in the “lonely outposts on the frontier of women’s basketball.”

Heisler seems to be alone in praising the efforts of the women’s team. All reports I have heard announce the U.S. women’s gold-medal win with the disclaimer, “Although the men’s basketball team lost . . . “ The victory of the U.S. women’s team cannot be afforded the dignity to stand alone. Even in the media, they cannot shake the shadow of inequality.
