Longshot Huggie Hanover beat a field of 10 in each of the first two heats and won the 96th running of the $170,910 Kentucky Futurity, the final leg of trotting’s Triple Crown.
Huggie Hanover, driven by part-owner Ron Waples, won the second heat in a stakes-tying record 1 minute 55 seconds, edging the favored Firm Tribute and Slybowl Hanover.
In the first heat, Huggie Hanover, at 60-1 odds, covered the mile in 1:56.2, beating Supergill and Firm Tribute by a head.
The victory was worth $94,000, boosting Huggie Hanover’s lifetime earnings to $260,389.
