Swanson Speeds to Super Modified Victory at Saugus

Super Modified stock cars do not look very super. With wings the size of a small satellite dish, the undersized vehicles appear top-heavy and liable to flip if driven too fast into a turn.
But the 40-lap Super Modified main event before a season-ending crowd of 3,034 on Saturday night at Saugus Speedway was a super quick heat.
Averaging nearly 90 m.p.h., easily the fastest speed at Saugus this season, Mike Swanson of Kinsburg, Calif., moved into the lead on Lap 27 and roared to victory unchallenged.
The race, run in 17 minutes, was halted just once, when Art Bigiogni of Soledad and Jeff Helton of Madera were involved in a high-speed spinout on Lap 16.
The race marked the end of Saugus’ 7-month regular-season schedule.
In the 10-lap main event for “old-timers” driving vintage cars, Dickie Ferguson of Mojave moved into the lead on Lap 6 and edged Roy Prosser of Sun Valley and Ray Swan of Burbank.
Ferguson is 69; Prosser celebrated his 73rd birthday at the track.
