44% of Canadians Back Free Trade With U.S.

TORONTO — About 44% of Canadians support the free trade agreement with the United States, but people remain sharply split over the issue, according to a poll published Friday.
The poll of 1,515 people by the Environics Research Group and the independent Globe and Mail newspaper also showed 42% opposing the agreement and 14% undecided. Support increased by 7 percentage points from the last poll, conducted in June, but opposition also increased by 2 percentage points.
The trade agreement, signed by President Reagan and Prime Minister Brian Mulroney in January and approved by the U.S. Senate last month, has become the main issue in Canada’s Nov. 21 national elections.
