Quarterback Jack Hay passed for a touchdown and running back Scott Tibbets ran for another to lead Sonora High School to a 14-6 Freeway League victory over Buena Park Friday night at Buena Park High School.
The victory by Sonora was the first under Coach Larry Allen and also extended Buena Park’s Freeway League losing streak to 23 games. The Coyotes last won a Freeway League game during the 1983 season.
Sonora (1-5, 1-0) never trailed as Tibbets scored on a 2-yard run 5 minutes into the game. Tibbets’ score was set up by Marcus Garrett’s interception of Buena Park quarterback Matt Acevedo’s pass on the Coyotes’ first offensive play.
Sonora extended its lead to 14-0 before halftime when Hay connected with wide receiver Kevin Cook on a 49-yard pass play.
Buena Park (2-3-1, 0-1) drove inside the Raiders’ 20-yard line 3 times in the second half, but scored only once, on Acevedo’s 10-yard pass to running back Steve Reid.
