PREP FOOTBALL : Sunset League : Defense Helps Edison Remain Unbeaten

Edison High School Coach Dave White was pleased with his defense’s effort Friday night as the Chargers forced 5 turnovers and limited Huntington Beach to 164 yards at Huntington Beach High.

However, despite a 21-6 Sunset League opening-victory, White was not so pleased with Edison’s offensive performance. “We didn’t block well, and we were taking a lot of breathers when we had the ball,” White said. “If we play like this next week (against arch-rival Fountain Valley), we’ll lose.”

It was the inconsistency of the offense that bothered White most. “A couple of times we had 15-play drives and scored; the rest of the time it was 3 (plays) and kick. Give their defense credit, they did a good job, but we’ve got work to do.”

Junior running back Shane Sherman rushed for 111 yards and a touchdown in 25 carries to earn the only praise bestowed on the Charger offense. “He’s a good runner, he runs hard,” White said.

If not for an injury to starting tailback Gus Miranda, Sherman might not have gotten the opportunity to please his coach. Miranda scored 2 touchdowns and gained 62 yards before twisting an ankle.

Charger defensive back Dan McCown intercepted 3 Eric Pettinato passes to help Edison improve its record to 6-0. The Oilers fell to 1-5.
