Local News in Brief : Senior Complex Dedicated

Officials this week welcomed 83 of Hawthorne’s newest residents at the dedication of a 75-unit senior housing complex at 13000 Doty Ave.
The project for low- and moderate-income senior citizens was developed by The East Los Angeles Community Union (TELACU) with funds from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development. Rents are subsidized; for example, a senior citizen with $500 a month income would pay $150 a month in rent.
The 75 air-conditioned apartments are equipped with “panic buttons” so senior citizens can alert authorities in case of an emergency. The complex has security fencing and a recreation room with kitchen facilities and coin-operated laundry equipment.
Mayor Betty Ainsworth, City Manager R. Kenneth Jue and David C. Lizarraga, TELACU president, participated in dedication ceremonies Monday.
