A Cathedral City police officer was fatally injured when he was struck by a car as he was investigating a traffic accident, the Cathedral City Police Department reported. He was identified as David Vasquez, 30, who had been with the department since it was formed in June, 1984. Vasquez was struck about 6 p.m. at 35th Street and Date Palm Drive, said Lt. Raymond Griffith. He died about 90 minutes later at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage. The driver of the car that hit him, a 25-year-old Cathedral City woman, was questioned and released pending the outcome of an investigation.
