Thousand Oaks 25, Newbury Park 14--The Lancers (6-2-1, 5-0) set up a Marmonte League championship showdown next Saturday against Channel Islands after defeating Newbury Park (2-6-1, 2-3) at Newbury Park.
Anthony Gonzales, Thousand Oaks’ quarterback and part-time defensive back, grinned at the thought of playing for the league title, but he was most giddy about seeing the last of Panther quarterback Wayne Cook. Against a green Lancer secondary manned by 4 juniors, Cook passed for 209 yards and a touchdown in a game that was not decided until Thousand Oaks tailback Mike Lindsay dashed 76 yards for a touchdown with 4:07 left. Cook completed 14 of a school-record 43 attempts.
Lindsay rushed for 139 yards in 18 carries. Gonzales, who completed 8 of 13, passed for 144 yards and threw touchdown passes of 29 and 14 yards to David Kuenstle and Jeff Moore.
