PHOENIX — An explosion and fire forced the evacuation of more than 500 employees of the Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette at the newspapers’ downtown headquarters today but caused no injuries.
The explosion occurred at 10:27 a.m. as shifts were overlapping for the Gazette, an afternoon newspaper, and the Republic, a morning paper. “People who were in the building heard two muffled-type explosions,” fire spokesman Steve Jensen said. “One employee saw a fire in a wall area in the pressroom.” The cause of the explosion was not determined immediately.
