First Interstate Bank of California will phase out its practice of offering car loans through auto dealers. Spokesman John Popovich said it will drop the so-called indirect loans because competition from finance companies associated with big auto makers has made it unprofitable. However, he said, the Los Angeles-based bank will still to make car loans directly to consumers.
