SOUTHERN SECTION FOOTBALL PLAYOFFS : Division I : Henigan, Powe Lead Fountain Valley to 39-0 Victory

Fountain Valley High School’s 1-2 punch of David Henigan and Kedric Powe led the Barons to a 39-0 victory over St. Francis Friday in the first round of the Southern Section Division I playoffs at Huntington Beach High School.

Powe, a 5-foot 9-inch, 185-pound senior, did the most damage. He gained 160 yards in 11 carries and scored 3 touchdowns. Henigan, who like most of the Baron starters played only 3 quarters, completed 9 of 17 passes for 109 yards and 2 touchdowns.

It took the Barons (9-2) only 2 plays to score on their first possession. After forcing the Golden Knights (4-7) to punt, Fountain Valley took over on its 39-yard line.

Henigan competed a 13-yard pass to tight end Eric Sassenberg for a first down at the St. Francis 48. On the next play, Powe went 48 yards for the touchdown with 8 minutes 34 seconds left in the first quarter. Powe also ran for a 2-point conversion.

A fumble recovery by senior defensive tackle Drew Edborg set up a Fountain Valley score on its next possession. After a holding call against the Barons nullified a Powe touchdown, Henigan completed a 13-yard pass to Sassenberg for another score. Derek Mahoney’s conversion gave the Barons a 15-0 lead with 4:16 left in the first quarter.

“We wanted to start out real strong and we did,” Fountain Valley Coach Mike Milner said. “We played them 4 years ago and we figured they would be a physical team.”

Milner also praised his defensive unit, which posted its second shutout of the season.

Senior defensive back Jeff Higbee had 2 interceptions.

“Our defense has come around and played very well in the last three games,” Milner said.
