Sen. Pell in Cuba, Plans to See Castro

WASHINGTON — Senate Foreign Relations Committee Chairman Claiborne Pell (D-R.I.) flew to Cuba on Thursday for talks with President Fidel Castro on the possibility of a friendlier U.S. relationship with the island.
“There is an old saying that if something works, leave it alone,” Pell said through a spokesman before departing. “The policy toward Cuba is not working, so it may be time to change it.”
According to Pell’s spokesman, Frank Sieverts, the senator believes the time for a policy review is ripe because of the change in administrations in Washington and Cuba’s recent agreement, in U.S.-mediated talks, to begin withdrawing its estimated 50,000 troops from Angola.
