Leonid Taranenko of the Soviet Union set two world weightlifting records Saturday in the super-heavyweight division in the Bicentennial championships at Canberra, Australia.
Taranenko set a total lift mark of 1,045 pounds that included a mark of 585 1/4 in the clean-and-jerk, a quarter of an inch better than his previous record.
The previous total lift record of 1,038 1/2 pounds was set at last year’s World Championships in Czechoslovakia by Alexander Kurlovitch of the Soviet Union, a gold medalist in the Seoul Olympics.
Taranenko, who did not compete in Seoul, won the super-heavyweight gold medal at the 1980 Moscow Olympic Games.
