Different Customs

The World Watch column (Nov. 6), in which the writers said that the Soviet Union’s “customs regulations are strict and are strictly enforced,” obviously hasn’t heard about glasnost. We were in Russia in September.
The Moscow customs did not inspect anything on our arrival. The Leningrad personnel inspected nothing on our departure. We were not part of a tour group at either time. Airport personnel behaved courteously and efficiently. We urge everyone with a curiosity about the Soviet Union to plan a visit. It is eye-opening. It was always interesting, but do not expect first-class accommodations, good food or hygienic surroundings.
