A U.S. Air Force general was killed when the F-16 fighter-bomber he was flying crashed in Spain’s Guadalajara province near Torrejon Air Base during a routine training mission, a Defense Ministry spokesman said in Madrid. The spokesman identified the victim as Maj. Gen. Winfield S. Harpe, commander of the 16th U.S. Air Force. Officials said Harpe was the sole occupant of the plane and that it carried no weapons. No one was reported injured on the ground.
