Leftist guerrillas staged a series of overnight attacks in eastern El Salvador, firing at the regional military base in San Miguel and fighting government troops in the key garrison town of San Francisco Gotera, north of San Miguel. Official reports said that a police officer and two civilians, one a child, were wounded in Gotera, and that another civilian was wounded in San Miguel. Missionaries reported a three-hour battle in Gotera, but military officials declined to give details. In San Miguel, El Salvador’s third-largest city, guerrilla radio reported 28 military casualties in the attack on the 3rd Brigade headquarters. However, a brigade spokesman denied any casualties.
