Philanthropist M. Larry Lawrence has donated $100,000 to the Graduate School of International Relations and Pacific Relations at UC San Diego to set up a fellowship for minority women enrolled in the new program.
Alejandra Valdez, a 1988 political science graduate of UCSD, is the first recipient of the grant, which will cover her tuition for each year of study. Valdez hopes to establish a business career focusing on Latin America after completing her master’s studies.
Lawrence is best-known in San Diego for his activities on behalf of the Democratic Party and for his work in refurbishing the Hotel del Coronado as chairman of its board of directors.
