Cornerback Deion Sanders of Florida State is the only repeat selection on the 1988 Associated Press All-American football team.
Also on the team are tailback Barry Sanders of Oklahoma State, the Heisman Trophy winner; defensive tackle Tracy Rocker of Auburn, the Outland Trophy and Lombardi Award winner, and linebacker Derrick Thomas of Alabama, the Butkus Award winner.
The rest of the offense includes junior quarterback Steve Walsh of Miami, sophomore running back Darren Lewis of Texas A&M;, wide receivers Jason Phillips of Houston and Hart Lee Dykes of Oklahoma State, tight end Wesley Walls of Mississippi, tackles Andy Heck of Notre Dame and Tony Mandarich of Michigan State, guards Anthony Phillips of Oklahoma and Mike Utley of Washington State, and center Jake Young of Nebraska.
Rounding out the defensive team are ends Frank Stams of Notre Dame and Broderick Thomas of Nebraska, linemen Mark Messner of Michigan and Wayne Martin of Arkansas, linebackers Mike Stonebreaker of Notre Dame and Keith DeLong of Tennessee, and defensive backs Louis Oliver of Florida and Markus Paul of Syracuse.
Specialists are kicker Kendall Trainor of Arkansas, punter Keith English of Colorado and kick returner Tyrone Thurman of Texas Tech.
